Porto’s integration into the Mission of 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities created an opportunity to submit an innovative project. WAKE UP! – Wider Approach to Keep Engaged Citizens on Sustainable Urban Policies was thus launched under the European Programme EU Cities Mission Pilot Cities Programme – Pilot Cities Cohort 2 (2023), with the aim of driving behavioural change among Porto’s citizens and strengthening efforts towards the city’s decarbonisation.

WAKE UP! will take the form of a mobile application whose primary objective is to empower citizens through personalised insights based on their actual consumption patterns. It also seeks to provide each participating resident with a set of practical tips designed to foster active citizenship and contribute to a more sustainable city. This initiative stands out for the way it combines technology and data use as enablers of behavioural change. From the citizens’ perspective, Porto aims to create a gamification and incentive dynamic that encourages more sustainable choices.

The consortium, led by the Municipality of Porto, brings together the Municipal Environment Company of Porto (Porto Ambiente), the Porto Energy Agency, Águas e Energia do Porto, CEiiA and Porto Digital.

WAKE UP! began in May 2024 and is scheduled for completion in April 2026, with a total eligible investment of €599,258.75 shared among all partners.
