Climate Action

Crowne Plaza Porto has renewed its commitment to decarbonization by purchasing electricity with a Guarantee of Origin certified by EEGO (Entity Issuing Guarantees of Origin – REN, National Power Grid), confirming the use of clean, non-carbon energy sources. This decision aligns with the hotel’s internal environmental policy, which has already shown concrete results:

  • Energy class upgrade to B
  • Annual reduction of 176 tonnes of CO₂
  • 12% reduction in water consumption

“Electricity accounts for around 60% of the hotel’s total energy use. Ensuring that 100% of this consumption comes from renewable sources is a major step in our commitment to reducing climate change impacts and positioning the hotel as an Efficient and Responsible Company (EER),” says Carlos Vigo, Technical Director.

Energy optimization began with real-time monitoring and consumption analysis. Following a full transition to LED lighting, the focus shifted to minimizing HVAC impact—one of the primary energy demands. These efforts led to a significant annual CO₂ reduction of 176 tonnes and the hotel’s recertification as energy class B—particularly noteworthy for a building nearing four decades of operation.

In terms of water use, Crowne Plaza Porto excels through consumption rationalization. A monitoring system provides data every 15 minutes for each point of use. Flow reducers with Venturi technology were installed in all taps and showers to optimize efficiency.

On the gastronomic front, the hotel emphasizes seasonal cuisine, working with many local suppliers and applying circular economy principles. It even maintains an urban garden that partially supplies the soMos Restaurant & Lounge.

All these initiatives are supported by regular staff and guest awareness campaigns and training, reinforcing the commitment to social and environmental responsibility.

The certified renewable electricity strategy will soon be complemented by the thermal plant renewal project, already underway, which aims to reduce natural gas consumption by 30%.

Crowne Plaza Porto’s sustainability strategy is guided by the IHG Green Engage program, helping hotels reduce energy and water use, minimize waste, and improve overall environmental impact.
