The German School of Porto is one of the 136 officially recognized German Schools abroad worldwide. It originated on November 18, 1901, from the “Von Hafe School,” founded in 1885 by Pastor Martin Richter for children of the German evangelical community in Porto. Since then, it has developed into a Kindergarten, Primary School, and High School.

Currently, a total of 690 children and young people are guided and taught by 9 educators and 71 teachers of both German and Portuguese. This team enables the school to fully meet the requirements of the German educational curriculum.

In addition to Portuguese, the German School of Porto imparts German language and culture to the children. Students are encouraged to become multilingual, giving them the opportunity to obtain the German International Abitur. This diploma grants them access to higher education in Germany, Portugal, and other international universities.

Furthermore, the German School of Porto plays an important role as a German cultural institution in Porto. It regularly organizes its own cultural events, such as concerts, exhibitions, and theater performances, and also hosts traditional festivals and local events like the Christmas Bazaar and the Equinox celebration.

Through these activities, the bicultural school strengthens the relationship between Germany and Portugal and significantly contributes, with its focus on intercultural exchange, to the European Union and to the international connections of young people.

Climate action

Climate Protection Measures
With the aim of creating a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy future, we have installed solar panels on the roofs of our school. These panels use solar energy to generate electricity without producing harmful emissions. In this way, we are able to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels such as coal, oil, or gas, and thereby decrease our CO₂ emissions.

When choosing energy supply contracts, we give preference to companies that produce energy sustainably.

We are also committed to waste separation. To this end, we have placed bins for plastic, paper, and general waste in every classroom, and we have raised awareness among the children about proper waste separation. At first glance, waste separation may seem like a small measure, but it significantly contributes to resource preservation and environmental protection.

Additionally, whenever possible, we opt to use public transport for school trips, aiming to reduce our CO₂ emissions.

The school has a natural spring, which ensures the irrigation of green areas, allowing for a more efficient use of this resource.

All heating equipment has been replaced with new models that consume less electricity and gas.

Testimony

The German School of Porto signed the Climate Pact with the aim of actively contributing to sustainable climate protection. We are aware of our role as an educational institution, and we therefore want to take responsibility in this area, strengthen environmental education, and implement climate protection measures that also impact the daily lives of our students.

The goal of the Pact is to develop concrete projects and initiatives that reduce CO₂ emissions and promote environmental awareness within the school community.

As students are directly confronted with climate protection practices, the Pact provides an opportunity to develop in them an understanding of the climate crisis and the role they can play in actively combating it.
